Saudi Local Content, Explained Simply

If you do business in Saudi Arabia, you've probably heard the term local content more and more. It sits at the heart of Vision 2030, yet it's often treated as a confusing compliance box to tick. It doesn't have to be.

What it actually measures

At its simplest, local content measures how much of a company's spending stays inside the Saudi economy — local salaries, local suppliers, local manufacturing, training, and investment. The higher your local content percentage, the more value your business is keeping in the Kingdom.

Why it matters now

Local content is increasingly tied to who wins work. In tenders and government-linked contracts, a stronger local content score can be the difference between being shortlisted and being passed over. What used to be a "nice to have" is becoming a genuine commercial advantage.

The problem most companies face

The hard part isn't the idea — it's the data. Calculating a local content score means pulling together payroll, procurement, and supplier information that usually lives in different places. Many companies simply don't know their score, let alone how to improve it.

Turning a score into a plan

That's the gap I've been working on with Mahalli Pro: collect the data, calculate the score accurately, and then turn it into clear recommendations — spend here, localise this, train there. A number on its own doesn't help anyone. A number with a roadmap does.
